As Mechanical engineers, we have to stay up-to-date with the latest developments in materials, the latest developments technology.

Choosing the right material.

New materials can completely change a product:
Increased Strength, Improved Durability, Flexibility, A Reduction in Weight.

Would the design benefit from combining a number of different materials, using the individual properties of each of them? We need to consider which materials work well together and which don’t. We need to consider what finishes are available? Would coating the base material allow us to use it differently?

All of these can change the design of a product, its size, its weight and how it is manufactured.

Designing for manufacture

We need to ensure the design is practical to make, defining tolerances that work, that don’t cost too much or take to long to achieve.

We need to minimise costs, minimise waste, keeping the unit cost of production as low as possible.

Ensuring the design is practical

We also need to bear in mind how your plant will be used, how it will be maintained. Good design takes into account usability (how it will be used) and maintainability. You don’t want to have to take a machine to bits just to tighten a single bolt that you can see but you just cant get a spanner to it.
